Just a few meters away from the small village of Spilies, in a green glen, lies the cave of Agia Sofia. The scenery is beautiful especially during winter when the creek is full of water and the vegetation is luxuriant. The small church of Agia Sofia is situated at the entrance and behind it stands the impressive cave. A tour around the cave requires special attention, as there is water everywhere and can be extremely slippery. Pottery of the Late Neolithic period (6th millennium BC) was found in the cave, marking the earliest sign of human presence on the island. If you want to explore the cave and see the stalagmites and stalactites it is advisable to carry a flashlight with you.
